Difference between Psychologist and Psychiatrist
Hello everyone!!!
Today I am going to address a question of utmost importance. The question is "Is there a difference between a Clinical Psychologist, Counsellor and Psychiatrist?"
Psychology being an emerging field has aroused many questions and doubts amongst the local people. Many of us still do not have a complete idea of what psychologist do or what is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist.
Half of the population (of India) believes that psychologists are someone who deal with people whom they define as "pagal" or "stupid". I am really sad to use these words but most of us still use them to define those who need serious help and affection. I fail to understand the mindset of those people who devise and use such terms with such frankness and openness. Instead of providing help and support to them, we often tend to ignore them or stay away from them.
It is very important to change the mindset of such people so that they can be sensitive towards the people with poor mental health. Today through this blog I would like to clarify a very basic doubt that is being faced by almost every 10th person.
So we begin by understanding the various broad levels at which psychology employs professionals.
First things first, the foundation of this profession begins with a Counsellor. A counsellor helps the people to cope up with their everyday activities and give therapy by verbal means. They also conduct various psychometric tests and conduct workshops on career guidance. People with mild mental health issues often consult a counsellor. Nowadays, the Indian Government has made it compulsory to appoint a counsellor in schools and hospitals. With the ever increasing stress in the society, people often find it easier to have a talk with a counsellor and manage their everyday lives.
The second level of help is provided by the Clinical Psychologist. People who face little higher level of mental issues such as: mild depression, emotional, mental or behavioural disorders. They also find any potential disorders. They do so through interview, observation and test. They are in no way allowed to prescribe any kind of medications, though the name arouses this confusion. However, clinical psychologists can only provide therapies without any medications.
The third and the highest level of help is provided by the Psychiatrists. People who face severe levels of mental health issues like: severe depression, schizophrenia... usually consult a psychiatrist. A psychiatrist is a professional who is allowed to provide medications to help out their patients. They basically provide treatment to all the types of mental disorders.
These are the basic levels of professionals whose works are often confused and mixed up. Though they have an overlapping treatment system, still they are different and independent of each other. However, they may refer their clients to their higher professionals if they feel it is difficult for their level.
So this was all that I had to tell through this blog. I hope that most of us now have a sense of clarity regarding the profession of Psychologists. Moreover, we should learn to be more sympathetic towards those who are suffering from severe mental issues. We should treat them with equal respect and dignity. This would not only help them increase their sense of self respect but would also help them deal with their issues.
