What is the difference between Sympathy, Empathy and Compassion?

Hello everyone!!!

Once upon a time, there was a bunch of four friends, Raju, Kaju, Maju and Waju. They were in the 1st year of their college life. All of them were friends since class 10th and were really happy to get the same college. They all did a lot of parties, studies and enjoyed their lives thoroughly. They all were quite close to each other and each others families as well.

One fine day, they were in the college canteen to celebrate Raju's birthday, suddenly his phone rang. He went away from the crowd and took the call. It was the call of his mom. All the friends were waiting for him eagerly but then they saw something that made them tensed. They saw that Raju's phone was on the ground and he was crying badly! All three of them ran in his direction to investigate into the matter.

At first Raju couldn't speak anything. He was continuously crying and sobbing. Finally he uttered four words that made all of them run. He said that, "MY FATHER IS DEAD".

All four of them ran and meanwhile booked a cab to go to Raju's home. After 45 minutes they reached his place where they saw an ambulance, police and loads of people crying and finally Raju's mother who was sitting on the sofa and seemed dumbstruck.

Raju ran in the direction of his mother and asked about how everything happened. She explained to her son that his father's car got crashed by a truck and that he died due to excessive bleeding. Raju and his mom couldn't believe what had happened. They were unable to bear the loss of a loved one who was so close to them.

Finally, the rituals took place and Raju and his mom came back home.

NEXT DAY

One by one, Raju's friends came over...

Kaju gave them a bunch of flowers and a card. By this he wanted to express his grief for the loss of his friend's father. He displays an act of Sympathy.

Maju's eyes were pooled up with tears which he tried to control until they came out as a flowing stream of salty water. He couldn't believe what he saw and was too sad for Raju. He could feel what Raju must be feeling on the loss of his father. He displays an act of Empathy.

And, if we talk about Waju, then he was the one who continued to visit Raju's place on a daily basis in order to spend time with them. He also helped them cope up with the pain and gave them support in every manner possible! He displays an act of Compassion.

AFTER 1 YEAR

Raju and his mom had now recovered from the loss and started to live life as they used to earlier. Raju was in the 2nd semester now and with the support of his friends he started to enjoy his life once again. His friends continuously motivated him to study and get a bright future. While Raju's mom also continued with her job and got promotions too!
All of them eventually got settled in their lives.

The story ends here but the conclusion is yet to be drawn.
So if we pay attention to the topic of this blog then for understanding that let us simply relate the actions of Raju's friends with Sympathy, Empathy and Compassion.

Out of all, Kaju was the one who displayed SYMPATHY.

It basically means that you are able to understand the anger, joy or grief of another person.

Maju is someone who seemed to display EMPATHY.

Empathy is seeing with the eyes of another, listening with the ears of another, and feeling with the heart of another, i.e., feeling the way the other person feels. As the famous saying says "Being in someone else's shoes".

Waju displayed an act of COMPASSION.

If someone is compassionate then they display the willingness to relieve the suffering of another person. Its the highest degree of Humanity!
As stated by Anne Frank: "No one has ever become poor by giving". Its not necessary that you are compassionate towards your loved ones only, instead true compassion is when you are sensitive towards strangers and are willing to provide them help!

These were the basic meanings of these terms.
We all must be compassionate enough to help those in need in order to increase the level of Humanity in the coming era!

I hope all of you have understood it thoroughly and would try and apply it in real life situations.

Share it with as many people as possible so as to enlighten the world by these immensely important terms.
